July 2018 Visa Application Fee Increases

Over the past decade, Visa Application Charges (VACs) have been known to change annually, with most years seeing the VACs increasing (and on very few occasions, decreasing).

In line with this precedent, on 21 June 2018, the Australian Government passed an amendment to the Migration Regulations 1994 seeing an increase to VACs by approximately 2-3%, depending on the type of visa. The VACs are then indexed and rounded off to the nearest $5. The Australian Government made these changes with the view of generating $410 million over the next 3 years. These changes apply to all visa applications made from 1 July 2018 onwards.

Whilst the increase in VACs are not a cause for alarm, it was announced in the May 2017 budget that the visa fees shall be increased annually to reflect the forecast consumer price index. Based on this, it is expected that VACs are going to increase on an annual basis in the future. This means that if you are thinking about making an Australian visa application, it is worth considering lodging it as soon as possible to avoid being affected by the anticipated annual increase.

If you want to know what visa categories have seen a fee increase and by how much, you can refer to our table below which outlines the changes in a nutshell. The new fees displayed in the table below may differ depending on your personal circumstances or whether you already hold another Australian visa. If this might be the case for you, you can use the Home Affairs ‘Pricing Estimator‘ tool.
